submission guidelines

Please read all of the following before submitting:

Every issue of Alltopia is organized around a given theme, puzzle, issue, or question. We ask that you check out our themes before submitting your work. Note that broad and creative interpretations of themes are more likely to catch our attention than obvious or literal ones.

We are primarily interested in the following genres:

  • nonfiction
  • investigative journalism
  • memoir
  • critical essay
  • short poetry

We aren’t really looking for fiction right now, but there are lots of other great journals that are! Here is a handy database for locating the right fiction journal for you.

We also welcome submissions of art: primarily drawings, sketches, doodles, woodcuts, photography, and collage. Remember that this is a black-and-white publication, so we won’t be able to reproduce works in color, unless it is selected for the cover. We will also consider paintings or multimedia works, if you can scan a copy and send a pdf or jpg that will photocopy clearly.

Written work should be typed, double-spaced, and no longer than 3500 words. Please make sure your name and title are on the top of the page.   Shorter work will be given preference, as it allows more artists to be included in the fun! If submitting electronically, please use Microsoft Word or some compatible program.  Your name should be the file name of the document; do not use the theme as the name of the file.

Artwork can be sent as jpegs or pdf, or via post in physical form – keep in mind that hard copies will not be returned.

Please include a 2-3 sentence bio of yourself with all submissions, and be sure to let us know how you’d like to be credited. (Hint: using your real name may pay off later with publication credits!)

There are two ways to submit work:

  1. We love snail mail! Send submissions to: Alltopia Antholozine, c/o Lara Messersmith-Glavin 3134 SE 22nd Ave. Portland, OR 97202
  2. Email works great, too! Please include the theme in your subject line, for example: [disastrous futures - submission]. Send your writing to our editor: lara@alltopia.org.
